Shopping for imported car insurance can be frustrating especially for first time buyers.  Cars that are imported from other countries are often difficult to insure because they may be left-hand drive or have other differences in their construction and they can also be expensive to repair.  Imported car insurance is often not available from every car insurance company, but it can be found.  There are companies who specialize in insuring imports and can provide coverage for just about any import.

How Imported Car Insurance Differ

Imported car insurance is a little different from domestic car insurance because of the issues of standards and of finding replacement parts.  One of the most common countries from which cars are imported is Japan, where vehicles are left hand drive.  Many insurance companies will not insure a left had drive vehicle; finding an imported car insurance company that does requires a little extra effort.

If the car is rare, a specialty model or a high-end luxury vehicle, finding the parts to repair it can be very difficult and expensive, which is something many insurance companies do not want to deal with.  They will therefore raise imported car insurance rates to make up the difference, or not provide imported car insurance policies at all.  This leaves owners of imports at a loss; fortunately there are companies who will step in to fill the imported car insurance gap.

Finding a Fair Imported Car Insurance Policy

When it comes to shopping for imported car insurance, the best thing to do is to shop around carefully.  Look for recommendations from other imported car owners or ask at shops where import repairs are done.  People who have already found a good imported car insurance policy will be able to point you in the right direction.

Get quotes from several insurance companies specializing in imported car insurance, and if possible also obtain quotes from those larger companies who do offer imported car insurance policies.  Larger companies can sometimes offer better rates because they have a bigger customer pool to balance the risk.

It may take a little more effort to track down companies and get quotes, but having several imported car insurance quotes for comparison makes it easier to determine if you are getting a good deal.

Making the Search Easier

In some cases you may only need to make a few changes to your car to allow it to conform to local standards and qualify for a regular policy rather than an imported car insurance policy, making the rate cheaper.  Find out what work would need to be done to adapt the car to the standards and consider whether it might be worthwhile .  Since imported car insurance is often more expensive, a few alterations to bring the vehicle in line with standards could be worth the time and effort.

If you are looking for insurance for a left hand drive vehicle, changing the car is obviously out of the question.  Instead look for companies offering the same rates to left hand drive cars as they do for right hand drive; this will ensure you don’t pay more for your imported car insurance simply because it is left hand drive.

Your imported car is an investment and you want to protect it properly with the right car insurance policy.  Take the time to find a company that understands your needs and will work with you to find a rate and a policy you can live with.  With so many companies catering to the imported car insurance market today, you should be able to compare several quotes and find a fair price for your coverage without much difficulty.
