Apples to Apples: The Right Way to Compare Auto Quotes
Comparing auto insurance quotes is about more than just looking at premiums. Certainly, if you are looking to simply pay the least possible every month you can choose your insurance based on the lowest rate; but if you want to be sure you have the coverage you need, you will need to look a little more closely at the quotes you are receiving. To be sure you are comparing quotes on comparable insurance, you need to see that the numbers match up.
Liability Limits
Make sure that you are being quoted with the same liability limits from each company. Many insurance companies will initially quote at either the legal minimum or at a standard liability limit chosen by them. You can not assume that every quote will provide you with the same limits unless you have requested they quote at those limits. One of the benefits to requesting quotes from online insurance comparison sites is that you can request the same quote from several companies at once, rather than having to repeat your needs over the phone.
Check the Deductibles
One of the quickest ways to lower an insurance quote is to use a higher deductible for the comprehensive and collision portions of the policy. This is especially true of the collision deductible since it is the more expensive of the two coverage options. It’s important to be sure you have the same deductibles quoted on each of the policies to make sure the quotes are a fair comparison.
Watch for Extras
Some companies automatically add extras that you might not want, and this can make the policy more expensive. Check the coverage list for things like roadside assistance and other optional coverages. If you are not interested in that particular coverage you should be comparing quotes that do not include it! A quote might turn out to be a much better deal when you ensure it includes only the coverage you want to pay for.
When you request your auto insurance quotes, the only way to truly compare them is to be sure they are all based on the same information. The internet has made this much easier with tools that allow you to request quotes with your particular information and your needs, and without the interference of agents who might want to up sell you or find ways to make the quote appear falsely low. Car Insurance Estimators are developing rapidly online. Of course, in the end it is up to you to make sure you are getting quotes based on your particular needs.
